Etymology

In summary

From Gras (“grass”) + Hüpfer (“hopper”). A chiefly northern word, partly from Middle Low German grashüppel (and variants). Not attested in continental West Germanic before the 16th century, but considering Old English græshoppa perhaps older. Compare the similar motivation in German Heuschrecke.
