Etymology

In summary

From Middle High German gehœre, from Old High German *gihōra (attested as acc. sg. kehorun). Equivalent to ge- + hören; compare Dutch gehoor. This was a less common byform of Middle High German gehœrde, from Old High German gihōrida, itself cognate with Old Dutch *gehōrtha (attested as gehortoir, error for dat. sg. gehorton) and Old Saxon gihōritha. All of these words were originally feminines, but became neuter by analogy with collectives in ge- (first attested in Middle High German gehœrde alongside the feminine).
