Via German Low German from Middle Low German gēst, from Middle Low German gēst (“dry, elevated”, literally “cracking, gaping, yawning”), from Old Saxon gīnan, from Proto-West Germanic *gīnan. See also gähnen. Cognate with Dutch geest (“heathland”).
