15th century, either from or akin to Middle Low German bōle (“thick board”, 14th c.), probably from Proto-Germanic *bulaz (“trunk; plank”), and cognate with Middle Dutch bolle, Old Norse bolr (see there for more), English bole (all “tree trunk”), and further with the family of Bolle (“round object”), Ball (“ball”).
