Etymology

In summary

From Middle High German ātem, from Old High German ātum, from Proto-West Germanic *ādm, *āþm, from Proto-Germanic *ēþmaz, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁eh₁tmén-. Cognate with Dutch adem and Old English ǣþm. Doublet of Odem. Final unstressed -em (except in the adjectival dative ending) regularly becomes -en in Late Middle High German; compare Boden, Faden. The corresponding form āten is attested, but did not establish itself because of the influence of the verb atmen.
