Etymology

Inherited from Old Catalan palissa (“fence, palisade”) (especially in the context of jousting), either borrowed from Spanish paliza or an indigenous formation, in either case etymologically Latin pālus (“stake”) and perhaps -icea. The change from /l/ to /ʎ/ is likely by analogy with lliça or vall.
