Etymology
At least two theories are suggested: * From Basque mart- (“blackberry; bramble”), as in martotx (“bramble”), martsuts, martuza (“blackberry”). Basque also gave Aragonese martuel, Spanish madroño. Similar sense development in Galician amorodo, Portuguese morango (“strawberry”), both from amora (“blackberry; bramble”). * From Gaulish *majoþa. Compare Occitan majofa, Lombard magiostra. Note also Armenian մաթուզ (matʻuz).
