Inherited from Old Catalan lançar, from Late Latin lanceāre 'hurl (a spear)', from Latin lancea (“spear”) (whence Catalan llança), of Celtiberian origin. First attested in the 14th century. Compare French lancer, Italian lanciare, Occitan and Portuguese lançar, Spanish lanzar.
