Borrowed from Andalusian Arabic الضَّبّة (aḍ-ḍábba, “latch”), from Arabic ال (al-, “definite article”) + ضَبّة (ḍabba, “mounting on a door”, literally “she-lizard”). Displaced Latin pessulus, which would have yielded *péssol.
