Etymology

Clipping of حِلَبْلَاب (ḥilablāb), from Classical Syriac ܚܒܱܠܒܳܠܴܐ (ḥᵊbalbālā); another derivative of ܚܰܠܒ݂ܳܐ (ḥalbā, “milk”) – based on the “milk”-giving qualities of the ivy –, as also حُلْبَة (ḥulba, “fenugreek”), حُلْبُوب (ḥulbūb, “mercury”), and حُلَّب (ḥullab, “Flueggea tinctoria; Euphorbia aegyptiaca and Euphorbia granulata”) which is also transmitted as حِلِبْلَاب (ḥiliblāb). And the same scheme of clipping is found in لَحْلَاح (laḥlāḥ, “meadow-saffron”).
