Etymology

In its origin an adjective, bearing the form of an ancient passive participle to the action of عُرْس (ʕurs, “wedding”) to which the bridal couple is subjected. Hence the natural plural is عُرُس (ʕurus), based on which the female part in Classical Arabic got the plural-plural عُرُسَات (ʕurusāt) – variant عُرْسَات (ʕursāt) – for specification, and the male part أَعْرَاس (ʔaʕrās) apparently by way of suppletion from عِرْس (ʕirs, “bridegroom or bride”), and then the female part particularly in Modern Standard Arabic by way of suppletion from the dialect form عَرُوسَة (ʕarūsa) its plural عَرَائِس (ʕarāʔis).
