Etymology

Acronym of الدَّوْلَة الْإِسْلَامِيَّة فِي الْعِرَاق وَالشَّام (ad-dawla al-ʔislāmiyya fī l-ʕirāq wa-š-šām, literally “The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant”). It resembles the Arabic words دَاعِس (dāʕis, “that tramples”) or دَاحِس (dāḥis, “one who causes discord”).
