In summary

From Middle High German rō, from Old High German (h)rō, from Proto-West Germanic *hrau, from Proto-Germanic *hrawaz, from Proto-Indo-European *krewh₂-. Cognate with Dutch rauw, English raw. In Old High German only the uninflected stem was monophthongised to -ō. Various ways of levelling yielded many variants in Middle High German (including rō, rōch, rou, rā). The contemporary form has been standard since the 17th century.
