corbis

(Anglais)

basket; basketful

Prononcé comme (IPA)
[ˈkɔr.bÉȘs]
Étymologie (Anglais)

Unknown. Some refer it to Latin curvus, others to Ancient Greek ÎșÏŒÎ»Ï€ÎżÏ‚ (kĂłlpos) or from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kerbʰ- (“to turn (around), wind”) (cognate with scirpus); it could be also a Semitic borrowing, comparing Ge'ez ኹሹቩ (kĂ€rĂ€bo, “basket”), Amharic ኹሹቩ (kĂ€rĂ€bo, “basket”), considering the variant Ge'ez ኹበሼ (kĂ€bĂ€ro, “basket”) possibly related to Ge'ez ኹፈር (kĂ€fĂ€r, “basket”), Tigrinya ኹፈር (kĂ€fĂ€r, “basket”), Arabic Ù‚ÙŽÙÙÙŠŰ± (qafÄ«r, “basket”). Alternatively, possibly borrowed from early Proto-West Germanic *korb, from Proto-Germanic *kurbaz, from earlier *krebĂŽ (“basket”), from Proto-Indo-European *gerbʰ- (“bundle”).
