Étymologie (Anglais)

In summary

From Proto-Iranian *hijwáH (compare Persian زوان (zavân)/زبان (zabân), Pashto ژبه (žəba), Avestan 𐬵𐬌𐬰𐬎𐬎𐬁 (hizuuā)), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́iȷ́ʰwáH (compare Sanskrit जिह्वा (jihvā), Hindi जीभ (jībh)), from Proto-Indo-European *dn̥ǵʰwéh₂s (compare Old Prussian insuwis, Russian язы́к (jazýk), French langue, English tongue). The expected sound development would be *zivan, however it seems Kurdish does not allow -z- followed by -m- as it does not with -š- and -m-/-n- (compare the sound changes in jimartin, nas, hîn etc.), therefore the earlier -*w- shifted into -m- instead. The Southern Kurdish زوان (zwan) was preserved because of Hawrami influence.
