Etymologie (Englisch)

From Latin tuus, from Proto-Italic *towos. In the singular, Latin tuum underwent *ʊu > *ou > *ɔu dissimilation, cf. Sardinian tou, and also Latin ōvum > Italian òvo, Spanish huevo, ultimately producing [ˈtwɔu], and a plural [ˈtwɔi]. Italian then underwent its regular *wɔV > *uV sound change, cf. *bwɔe > bue, *mjɛu > mio, producing ultimately [ˈtu.o]. This latter sound change is blocked by a following [i], which explains the plural form tuoi, cf. *mjɛi > miei.
