Etymologie (Englisch)

From ab- + luchsen. The latter from Low German lucksen, intensive form of luken, from Middle Low German lūken (“to pull, to pluck”), from Proto-Germanic *leukaną, which is related to Locke (“curl”, originally “tuft of hair”). In Standard German it was associated with an originally unrelated verb luchsen (“to peer, lurk”), which is derived from Luchs (“lynx”), an animal considered cunning and sharp-eyed.
