From the Proto-Indo-European *dʰuh₂-li-s, from the root *dʰewh₂- (“to blow; wind, vapor, smoke”). Cognate with Lithuanian dūlis (“fog”). See also Latin furvus (“dark, swarthy”), fuscus (“dark, black”) and fūmus (“smoke”). For the terminal element, compare -īgō.
