From Middle Dutch tieren, from Proto-West Germanic *tiari- (“neat, splendid”), from Proto-Germanic *diH-or-i-. The ultimate origin is uncertain, but cognate with Old Norse tærr (“clear (water)”), which could be related to tár (“tear”) << Proto-Germanic *tahrą.
