In summary

From Ottoman Turkish چلدرمق (çıldırmak, “to go mad, to lose one's wits”), earlier attested as a derivative چلدردی (çıldurdu, “crackling noise”). Akin to Karakhanid [script needed] (çaldrāmāk, “to clank, jingle”). Compare also Turkish çatlamak (“to make a cracking sound, to crack, to go mad”) for a similar semantic evolution.
