In summary

Most likely a contraction of either Latin mītificus (“mild, soft, gentle”), based on mītis (“mild, mellow”), or of mītigatus (“softened”), from mītigō (“to make soft”). Note, however, that similar forms exist in other European languages (compare English meek, Gothic *𐌼𐌿𐌺𐍃 (*mūks), Old Norse mjúkr (“soft, gentle”), and Greek μαλακός (malakós, “soft”). Alternatively from Latin magicus, and thus doublet to the borrowing mágico; cf. Portuguese meigo, Leonese meigo, and Galician meigo.
