From Middle Low German *pelle, whose existence is assured by the word’s prevalence in eastern dialects of German Low German (and East Central German). It was introduced there by Dutch settlers from Middle Dutch pelle, an old borrowing from Latin pellis (“skin”). Compare modern Dutch pel, pellen.
