In summary
From Ottoman Turkish اولومق (ulumak, “to howl”), from Proto-Turkic *ūlï- (“to cry, howl”). Altaicists compare it to Korean 울다 (ulda, “to cry, weep, neigh”), Mongolian улих (ulix, “to yawn, howl, cry out”), but the Altaic theory is now widely discredited. Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (ulı-, “to cry noisily, howl”), Azerbaijani ulamaq (“to howl, wail”), Bashkir олоу (olow, “to howl”), Chuvash ӑлах (ălah, “to neigh”), Kazakh ұлу (ūlu, “to howl, whine”), Kyrgyz улуу (uluu, “to howl”), Tuvan улуур (uluur, “to howl”), Uzbek ulimoq (“to howl”), Yakut улуй (uluy, “to howl”), Gagauz uulamaa, Turkmen uwlamak. May also be of imitative origin. Compare English ululate.
