Inherited from Ottoman Turkish قاتق (ḳatıḳ, “anything added, anything eaten with bread to give a relish, a condiment”), from Proto-Turkic *katïk (“anything added”) from *kat- (“to mix, to add, to tie to”), equivalent to kat- + -ık. A cognate with Kazakh қатық (qatyq).
