From Ottoman Turkish قوف (kof), ultimately from Proto-Turkic *kobu- (“hollow, cavity”). Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (koɣï), [script needed] (kowï, “empty, hollow”), Karakhanid [script needed] (qowï, “empty, rotten”), Kyrgyz коо (koo, “hollow”), etc.
