Latin dono Perhaps from Proto-Italic *dōnāō. Equivalent to dōnum (“gift”) + -ō (denominative suffix). Italic cognates in Oscan 𐌃𐌖𐌍𐌀𐌕 (dunat) and Venetic [script needed] (donasto) point to a Proto-Italic etymology, although De Vaan suggests that it remains possible that these merely represented the same development occuring separately in different languages.
