In summary
From Middle High German klam (“narrow, tight, solid”), from Old High German klam, from or related to Proto-West Germanic *klaimijan (“to smear with clay”). The modern sense is chiefly Central and Low German (Middle Low German klam). Cognate with Dutch klam. Also related with English clammy.
