From a Proto-Semitic *gVr- (“whelp,cub”); cognates with Hebrew גּוּר (gúr), Aramaic גורי (gūrē), Phoenician 𐤓𐤂 (rg /gar/, “young of a lion”), Akkadian 𒆜 (gerrum, “way, path; young one of an animal, from the sense of a traveling companion”). Related to the root ج و ر (j w r), meaning “to be a neighbor”, “to be under one's protection”, “to be a client”, “to follow around, to travel close with”, “to be a trainee or deputy”.
