Inherited from Ottoman Turkish حاجی (ḥācci, ḥacı, “one who has performed or is on the road to perform the rites of pilgrimage in Mecca, a pilgrim, a Christian who has performed or is performing a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, a title of respect for strangers”), from Arabic حَاجِي (ḥājī), from حَاجّ (ḥājj, “person who has performed the pilgrimage to Mecca”).
