Etymologia (Angielski)

In summary

From Middle Dutch coorts, corts, curts. Related to Middle Low German korts (ā€œfeverā€), possibly abbreviated from a phrase containing korts (ā€œshortā€), from Middle High German kurz. An indirect relationship with kool (ā€œcoalā€) has been suggested, via Proto-Indo-European *ǵwelH- (ā€œburn, shineā€); compare Sanskrit ą¤œą„ą¤µą¤²ą¤¤ą¤æ (jvĆ”lati, ā€œburn brightly, blazeā€) and ą¤œą„‚ą¤°ą„ą¤¤ą¤æ (jÅ«rti, ā€œfeverā€). But this is quite speculative as all Germanic derivatives of this root have the sense of "coal", and it is formally unlikely.
