From Provençal and Occitan petanca, pèd tanco (“foot fixed (to the ground)”), a contraction of pè (“foot”) and tancar (“to attach, close”), together meaning "feet together" in reference to the position that players are supposed to adopt when throwing the ball (in contrast to that of the Provençal version).
