Etymologia (Angielski)

Referenced as κάρφεα (kárphea, “cinnamon”) in Herodotus's Histories in connection to Arabia by 440 BC, as well as being attested as a name in Pre-Islamic Arabia; containers with cinnamon residue have been found in the Levant dating to 3,000 years ago. Related to قِلْف (qilf, “bark, rind”), قِلَافَة (qilāfa, “bark, outer covering”), and Classical Syriac ܩܠܦܬܐ (qlāp̄tā, “bark, peel”); perhaps ultimately an early Semitic borrowing from a Dravidian language such as the precursor of the Tamil கருவா (karuvā, “cinnamon or clove tree”).
