Etymology
Disputed. De Vaan sugges that the term may derive from Proto-Italic *winkjō, itself from a nasal-infixed formation of Proto-Indo-European *weyk- (“to curve, bend”). Alternatively, the term may have emerged as a back-formation from vīnxī, which is the perfect stem of the verb. Cognate with vicis, Ancient Greek εἴκω (eíkō).
