From Latin (Pagus) Medullicus (“country of the Medulli”), the local Celtic/Gaulish tribe who had inhabited the area. This name is probably from Proto-Celtic *medwos, from Proto-Indo-European *médʰu (“mead”), or alternatively *medyos (“middle”).
