Meaning

A mountainous region in the easternmost part of Europe, lying between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, comprising republics of Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. Also known as Transcaucasus.

From trans- + Caucasus. Calque of Russian Закавка́зье (Zakavkázʹje, literally “beyond the Caucasus”), as viewed from the side of Russia.
