Etymology
Literally, “stone of stumbling”. This phrase originates from the Bible translation made by Martin Luther, in particular from the passage of Isaiah 8:14 in which אֶבֶן נֶגֶף (ʾeven neḡef) is mentioned in the original Hebrew version. Compare Dutch steen des aanstoots.
