Of unknown origin. Possibly related to Proto-Germanic *hamô (“collar, harness, fishnet”). Traditionally compared to Ancient Greek χάβος (khábos, “muzzle, curved”), but De Vaan rejects the possibility of a loan due to the vowel length.
