Etymologie (Engels)

From presumed Proto-Italic *hāns (stem *han-s-, where the strong stem was most likely contaminated by the weak stem, resulting in *hānsez- > Latin ānser-), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰh₂éns (or similar; the reconstruction is debated). The form was influenced by unrelated anas (“duck”), as the presumed original initial aspiration is wholly unattested in the Latin word. Cognates include Sanskrit हंस (haṃsa), Ancient Greek χήν (khḗn), Russian гусь (gusʹ), Old Irish géiss, Old English gōs (English goose), and Albanian gatë (“heron”).
