The English -u- (instead of more etymological -a-) is a pronunciation spelling representing Hindi [ɐ]. In German, in turn, this -u- was given a spelling pronunciation, leading to [ʊ] as well as a remotivation as Kummer (“sorrow”) + Bund (“waistband”).
