Etymologie (Engels)

In summary

From Old High German gifugili. The expected modern form is *Gefügel, a collective form pertaining to Vogel (“bird”), cf. similar Dutch gevogelte. The connection with Vogel was lost in German and the word was at some point re-interpreted as Geflügel, that is “creatures with wings; winged ones”. Cf. Flügel (“wing”).
