Inherited from Ottoman Turkish اوتوراق (oturaḳ, “taking a rest, the place of a halt, a permanent residence, any seat, the part on which a person or item sits, bottom”), from Ottoman Turkish اوتورمق (oturmaḳ, “to sit, to incubate, to live, to remain in a place, to ascend the throne, to go ashore”), from Old Turkic 𐰆𐰞𐰺 (ul¹r¹), from Proto-Turkic *oltur- or Proto-Turkic *olur- (“to sit”), morphologically otur- + -ak. Cognates with Albanian oturak, Azerbaijani oturaq, Kyrgyz отургуч (oturguc), Turkmen oturgyç.
