In summary

Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese vermelho (“red”), from Vulgar Latin *vermiclus, from Latin vermiculus (“little worm”), from vermis (“worm”), ultimately in reference to a scale insect of species Kermes vermilio, used to make a crimson dye. Cognate with Galician vermello, Spanish bermejo, Asturian bermeyu, Catalan vermell, Occitan vermelh, French vermeil and Italian vermiglio. Also related to English vermilion. Doublet of vermículo, which was borrowed.
