Etimologija (Anglų k.)

In summary

Perhaps ultimately from a Proto-Germanic *hwelpaną (“to cry, yelp”), whence *hwelpaz (“whelp”) may also derive. Alternatively, from the same root as *hwelbaną (“to curve”) (Dutch welven), referring to the curved beak characteristic of curlews. Cognates include Saterland Frisian Wilp, West Frisian wylp, Old English hwilpe, Scots whaup and perhaps English yarwhelp (“godwit”).
