In summary

Borrowed from French bioscope and/or German Bioscop (now spelt Bioskop), a term used in the names of two early film projectors, developed by the Frenchman Georges Demenÿ and the German Max Skladanowsky, respectively. Compare English bioscope. Ultimately from Ancient Greek βίος (bíos, “bio-, life”) + σκοπέω (skopéō, “I look at”), thus roughly “watching life”. Equivalent to bio- + -scoop.
