Probably denominal, perhaps from a root noun *kēls (“hiding-place”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱel-. The older and more straightforward formation *kelō is found in occulō. Related to clam. Cognate with Old Irish ceilid (“to hide”) and Proto-Germanic *helaną, *huljaną.
