Borrowed from Ancient Greek Ἀλᾱνός (Alānós), Ἀλᾱνοί (Alānoí). Perhaps renewed in Late Latin, especially in Spain in the meaning "dog breed", as a Migration Period Wanderwort, e.g. via Gothic *𐌰𐌻𐌰𐌽𐍃 (*alans).
