1590, as Neapolitan pizza (Velardiniello, La storia de cient'anne arreto). Likely related to Byzantine Greek πίτα (píta, “cake, pie”) (12th century);
the origin of the Greek word is itself uncertain. Also possibly from Lombardic bizza (also pizza or bizzo (pizzo), which would rather suggest a north-to-south spread of the word. See the English and Greek entries for more detail.
