Table mountain formed during subglacial volcanic eruptions, consisting primarily of a mound of pyroclastic palagonitic tuff, lava delta hyaloclastites, and pillow lavas erupted subaqueously in an englacial lake, capped by a resistant layer of subaerially-emplaced lava.

Coined by Canadian volcanologist Bill Matthews in 1947. Named after Tuya Butte, in British Columbia.
