Chiefly since 19th century, from Ancient Greek ἔθνος (éthnos) + -isch, after ἐθνικός (ethnikós) and their descendants Latin ethnicus, French ethnique. The pronunciation with /eː/ was probably influenced by the fact that, until 1901, th often indicated the length of adjacent vowels (like Muth, That etc.).
