From Middle High German ellende, contracted from Old High German elilenti, from Proto-West Germanic *alljas (“other”) + *land (“land”). The modern form with a long vowel is based on Middle Low German elende and/or other regional variants. Today pronounced also with a secondary full vowel in the second syllable. Cognate to Dutch ellende (noun).
